The Canary Islands are constituted by seven islands formed by volcanic eruptions, lying between the Western coast of Africa and the Atlantic Ocean. The Canary Islands form one of the autonomous communities of Spain, and the islands are the most southerly part of Spain. For nature lovers, the chance to submerge yourself in the waters of El Hierro island cannot be missed, with one of the largest marine reserves and a dense tropical forest which has been declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
Tenerife, the largest island and the most populated, is a favorite holiday destination worldwide, receiving millions of tourists every year. The island is incredibly diverse, from the rugged natural landscapes and unique vegetation to pristine sandy beaches and small colonial towns, there are so many diverse sights to be seen and experiences to be had. Tenerife is home to the largest mountain in Spain, the Teide, which is also a volcano. You can reach the highest point by taking a cable car and then hiking to the top or explore the hiking trails in the surrounding national park. La Laguna town, with charming colonial Spanish architecture, is also a popular destination to explore the streets of brightly colored colonial houses. Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital, is a traditional port town which is the home of the stunning architectural attraction and auditorium “Adan Martin”. Enjoy the offering of fresh seafood here in the capital’s many bars and restaurants. The main attraction of Santa Cruz is the Carnival, which is held every year during the months of February and March, and it is characterized by the fantastic costumes, performances, and dances.
The accent here is quite distinct to that of mainland Spain and has more in common with Latin American Spanish, but Spanish learned here will be understood anywhere. The accent is easy to understand for learners from a beginner to advanced level, making it at a great base for many situations and dialects.
